Anita Diamant’s The Red Tent is the untold story of Dinah, from the bible, daughter of Jacob, sister to twelve brothers (including the famous Joseph) and is mentioned in the bible only in passing..
Anita Diamant uses this reference and weaves and embellishes Dinah’s story, and that of her female relatives, into a wonderful, celebratory story about women. It is described in one review as what the bible might have been like if it had been written by women.
Most of us confessed we would never have chosen this book, and felt some resistance to reading it. But that’s what book groups are all about – challenging members to pick up something they’d never normally consider. What a good thing we did as this book scored six ‘very goods’ and one ‘excellent’.
