The BWG have always given education sponsoring a high priority and have committed funds over many years to help needy children. We directly support students at Human Development Foundation (HDF), Bangkok, New Life Centre, Chiang Mai and Hot Chilli, Bangkok. We also indirectly support many other students through HDF, Fatima Centre, St. Joseph’s Convent, Betong and Thailand Hilltribes Education Project (THEP). We receive regular reports about the progress of our ‘adopted’ children and it is pleasing to know how well they progress with such support.
The BWG also have a Mercy School which is run under the auspices of HDF where funds are raised by our very own Cracker Ladies. This name came about when a group of ladies, headed by Shirley Kennedy, made Christmas crackers at her home and when sold, the proceeds supported the Bang Na School. Being a very adaptable group, when it became almost impossible to get the ‘snaps’ for the crackers, bags and tags became their mission which has raised a great deal of money over the years. Every year as a treat, the BWG holds a Christmas Party in one of HDF’s schools every January where children (usually over 100) play pass-the-parcel, statues and musical newspaper (Thai adaptation of musical chairs!) We also serve them a special lunch and give every child a cuddly toy and goodie bag. A delightful time for all – helpers and children alike! The BWG also work on specific welfare projects, one of our biggest projects was following the Tsunami and with the generosity of BWG members, family and friends, donations were received from all over the world. We were able to supply fishing boats and help to rebuild a bridge.
We also support the People Eye Care Foundation (PECF) each year by holding a charity golf competition. PECF is operated by volunteer doctors and nurses who travel around the country giving their time and expertise for free to enable mainly elderly people with cataracts the chance to see again. Some of the other charities we support are the Karen Hilltribes Trust (KHT) and Thailand Hilltribes Education Project (THEP). In order to carry out our work and help support these children and other local Thai charities, we are always in need of volunteers.
